A DUXBURY Family Website

Duxbury Hall in 1846

Please note revised URL & E-mail addresses

This "Duxbury" web-site was established by my cousin, Peter Duxbury, with the aim of including all those who bear a Duxbury name and those who are descended from a Duxbury.

Peter died in September 2005 while his aim was still being achieved; please read the tribute to him by his wife, Margaret.

I agreed to take over the maintenance of the web-site and since then more Duxburys have been added to the Duxbury trees and a number of corrections made to the listing which now has over 20,500 names of whom over 6,800 were born with the Duxbury name, or a derivative of "Duxbury".

The listing of those bearing the Duxbury name and those descended from a Duxbury can be likened to a forest with four main Duxbury Family Trees and 190 minor trees (saplings).

The roots of the four main trees are from Ulf de Duxbury (about 1120), Ralph Duxbury (1696) of Waterside, Colne, David Duxbury (1709) of Eldridge, Yorkshire and Richard Duxbury (1778) from Wigston Magna, Leicestershire.

There are a further 190 smaller Duxbury trees (saplings) many of which could be grafted onto one of the main tress given time and availability of records. These more extensive of these trees are those of Nicholas Duxbury (1532) of Great Harwood, Henry Duxbury (1770) of Blackburn and Ralph Duxbury (1770) of Blackburn.

In addition there is an extensive tree of William Ducksbury (1785) from Kendal which now encompasses the earlier five sapling trees headed by Ducksburys. Is he the William Duxbury who was baptised in St Peter and St Paul, Ribchester (RC) on 17 Nov 1791?

There are also a further 14 smaller trees of different spelling of Duxbury (Duxberry, Ducksbury, Dukesbury and Deuxberry); all are thought to have stemmed from the same Duxbury family. These include the Dukesburys from Buffalo NY and Ontario who trace their roots back to David Dukesbury (1805) from Leeds in Yorkshire.

With time, resources and access to records it is hoped to reduce the number of sapling trees by grafting them together of better still grafting them onto a main tree. A number of the smaller trees stem from the discovery of a record of a Duxbury name in registers, but without any connection to others outside the immediate family.

Peter felt that it was only a matter of time before links were found between the main lines of Duxbury. Unfortunately this was not to happen in his lifetime, but it would be a fitting memorial to Peter if the connections between these many lines could be found.

Much of the information for updating the site comes by e-mail from people like you; those who have entered the website. Particular thanks to Ruth Duxbury for the Ralph Duxbury of Colne tree, to Julian Duxbury of Leicester for the Richard Duxbury of Wigston Magna tree and to Joe Duxbury of Cheltenham for the Nicholas Duxbury of Great Harwood tree.

Meanwhile I have added a limited amount of details from the 1901 and 1911 UK census records and the 1939 register records which were not available to Peter when he first assembled the information. There is much more to be done, but I have not started on including information from the 1921 census which is now available. Althogh this page has not been updated for almost a year the trees were updated last December and again now (March 2022). These updates have added a further 200 Duxburys.

By virtue of this website I have been in contact with a number of close relations (second and third cousins) with whom our family members had lost contact, a number of not so close relations (sixth cousins!) and many who have no direct family connection. This goes to show that the Duxburys are really one large family!

Additions to the website now include a Taylor family tree, my relatives as far as I know them, plus one for the Murphy, Johnson, Harrison and Mason families; my wife relatives. My Taylor roots include the Prestwich family and also included is a Prestwich forest aiming to include trees for all Prestwiches listed in the 1841 to 1911 census records. The root of the primary tree is from Thomas de Prestwich (1110) with branches through to the present day. Many more names have still to be added.

Please do get in touch if you have anything to add to the site and I will try and respond to all e-mails received. Some who have been in touch have given very sketchy details of their families and have not responded when asked for a few dates. As a result it has not been possible to help them find their roots or add them to the tree.

February 2024

Recent Events - February 2024

The additions made to the trees over the last year have primarily been as a reult of queries from Duxburys on where do I fit it. Even with only a few family details it has been possible to advise on their ancestors and add them to the appropriate tree. At times the enquirer has give so few details of their immediate family, and then not responded to requests, meaning that their ancestors cannot be identified. It is always satisfying to be able to help someone and a recent enquiry resulted in a family in the USA being linked into their ancestors from Lancashire who emigrated 200 years ago.

April 2023

Over the last few months a few more families have been added, and a number of minor corrections and additions made mainly of dates.

November 2022

The big change at the beginning of this month has been a new URL for the Duxbury Family website. Duxburyfamily.com has taken over from duxburymk.net. Please spread this news to those interested in the Duxbury ancestors. Ignore the old URL as it is now nothing to do with the Duxbury family. If you are intersted in further details of the change, please contact me.

March 2022

Over the last few months there have been additions to the Duxbury trees which have now been uploaded to the web. An earlier update was done last December. These updates have been instigated by Duxburys getting in touch and telling me about their families who were not on a tree. This has enabled extensions to a number of branches to the trees and enabled a few minor corrections to be made. I am currently working on more additions which will be included in the next update.

April 2021

The last few months has seen a concerted effort to find and add to the trees various Duxburys who had been missed in earlier research. These are primarily those who lived, and in some cases live, in England, but include a few from the USA thanks to a Duxbury getting in touch. There have been significant additions to the descendants of William Ducksbury (1785) from Kendal. As a result the number of names in all trees has reaching over 20,000. It was 11,000 in 2003.

In the early work in building these Duxbury trees for this website, trees from many sources were included. As this is a Duxbury website some of those who do not have any close relationship with a Duxbury have been removed. More of these will be removed in the future as more Duxburys are added so that the total number of names remains close to the current of 20,000.

November 2020

Resulting from a query on where do I belong in the Duxbury family, I have added a Duxbury family from the Wigan / Ashton in Makerfield area of Lancashire. This, along with a few other updates, brings the total of names on the trees to over 19,250. Still more to add!

March and May 2020

The events of the last few weeks have changed the way we work and think. Many are having to spend much longer time at home where boredom may set in. This is a time to think about your ancestors and undertake some research on-line.

For a start the Duxbury trees on this site has been updated twice in the last few weeks with the addition of about 850 more names, bringing the total to over 19,000; these include families of Duxburys from Blackburn, Colne, Dewsbury, (Greater) Manchester and London.

Now is the time to see if you are included and, if not, undertake the necessary research. Please let me know of your results so that I can include them on the tree. If you are a Duxbury, or descended from a Duxbury you should be there! If you need help, please let me know and I will see what I can do.

There are other trees for the Prestwich families and again if you are a Prestwich descendant, as I am, you ought to be included on one of these Prestwich trees. Likewise if you are a Johnson from the area of South Australia you might be linked to the Johnson tree.

Finally I would also be delighted to hear from any Taylor, or Taylor relative, who can trace his roots back to the Kirkham area of Lancashire in the mid 19th century. There must be some and I would like to hear from you. There must be more names to add to this tree, but where are they?

February 2020

After the push this time last year to add more with the Duxbury name to the tree, there has been less activity recently with the main additions to the Duxburys in Yorkshire. These have been helped by the increase in records coming on-line. Elsewhere more names have been added largely as a result of contacts from Duxburys and Duxbury descendants contacting me. Please keep these enquiries coming!

March 2019

Since last December there has been a significant update to a number of family trees. This was initiated by contact from Duxburys in both England and Australia. As a result additions have been made to Duxburys in Bolton, Blackburn and Burnley in particular. At the same time there has been a tidying of a number of trees and the removal of trees, or branhes of trees, which have no relevant to Duxburys.

More that 400 more names of those born with a Duxbury surname have been added with the total number of names on all trees increasing by about 1000 names to over 18,000. There are still many more Duxburys to be added! If you see an omission, do please get in touch.

December 2018

Enquiries received on "where do I fit into the Duxbury family" has resulted in additions to the trees for the Chorley Duxburys and the Burnley Duxburys. Thank you to those who have been in touch. The necessary research has shown that there are still more names to be added for Duxburys in both places and also for Duxburys in the Bolton area. The addition of these names, so far, has taken the total number of names on the trees to well over 17,900.

Additions have also been made to places named after Duxbury. Please advise of any missing from the list. A photograph of the splendid Fire Engine at Duxbury, MA has also been added - A fine tribute to the Duxbury name!

October 2018

The summer is not a time of year for researching on-line and hence no major updates to the site since June. Thank you to those of you who have responded with more places with the Duxbury name. I am sure that there are many more which I do not know about, so please let me know if you find an omission from the list. See the link below to Duxbury Names and Places.

A recent enquiry from a Duxbury descendant as to whether she was related to a friend, with a Duxbury surname, has resulted in another Duxbury Tree (a sapling) being added. This has taken the total number of names to well over 17,500 and has also revealed that there are many more Duxburys (and Duxbury descendants) from the Burnley of Lancashire who have yet to be added. An ongoing project!

Finally please let me know if you know of anyone who should be on a Duxbury tree but is not. It is through this feedback the numer of names has increased year by year.

June 2018

Firstly an apology to those who could not access the web pages in April. Hopefully the problem of a "robot" jamming matters has been resolved.

Although the last reported update was in December last year a few minor changes have taken place earlier this year.

There have been additions to the Duxbury Tree with now almost 17,500 names on the tree, but still many Duxburys do not yet appear.

The links to other websites have been updated and new ones added - a long overdue exercise which I hope you will find of use.

A suggestion from a "Duxbury" was to include some details of where the Duxbury name has been used. There are several roads, streets etc named Duxbury, but the best know use of the name is Duxbury, Massachusetts. There is also a Duxbury Point and there was a ship named Duxbury. Look at the link below to The Duxbury Name and Places and please let me know of addition as this list is just a start.

History and Family Tree over 1000 Years By Peter Duxbury

The DUXBURY family originated in Duxbury, near Chorley in Lancashire, England sometime between 600 and 900 CE (AD). The name Duxbury is believed to have been derived from Deowuc's Burgh, from the original settlement founded by Deowuc, an Angle. From Duxbury the family slowly spread out, initially northeastwards within Lancashire, but as time passed, across the whole country (thinly) and overseas. It was estimated in 1995 that less than 2400 households worldwide bear the surname DUXBURY. Many thousands more can trace their ancestry to the DUXBURY line. This website outlines some of the known family history from the earliest times through to the present day and contains a family tree in a format that the viewer can manipulate.
