This website is dedicated to the crew of R.A.A.F 460 Squadron Lancaster EE138 Coded AR-E2  E for “Easy”

On the 4th of September 1943 while returning to RAF Binbrook Airbase after a raid on Berlin, Lancaster EE138 was shot down by a Luftwaffe night fighter over Stadil, Denmark

The crew of 8 men in EE138 managed to steer the damaged Lancaster away from the village of Stadil before it crashed on the edge of the Vest Stadil Fjord.

"My mother stood watching the plane crash, and it flew low above the farm. If the pilots had not kept it in the air until it was free of the houses, I might not have been here today..." - Mr Anders N Andersen, September 2013.

To this day, all but one of the men remain within the fuselage of their plane, buried in the soft ground of the once marshy perimeter of the fjord.

In October of 2004, the crash site was visited by a crew member’s relative.  At that time it was very evident just how much appreciation and care was shown in the immaculate presentation of the garden, the memorial stone and surrounds at the EE138 crash site.  This was in stark contrast to a degraded information plaque which had been erected nearby in 1993 as a part of the 50th Commemoration. This plaque was not only out of place, but contained totally inaccurate information about the demise of EE138.

Again, in the middle of October 2004 another crew relative visited the Svinø cemetery where the only recovered remains of an EE138 crew member is interned, the poor state of repair of that grave site and headstone prompted a request to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for the grave and stone to be repaired.

As a result of the 2004 visits, a project was initiated in Australia to have the accurate, officially documented historical facts surrounding the loss of EE138 presented in 3 languages at the crash site, and to include more detailed information about the crew of EE138 and 460 Squadron. This project was finally realised with the support of the Australian Government and Danish officials in time for the 65th Commemoration in September 2008.

The Hon. Alan Griffin MP, former Australian Minister for Veterans' Affairs said the story behind the Stadil memorial in Denmark was a powerful reminder of the courage of Australians who served and died overseas.

“The Stadil memorial was built by the local community 65 years ago, and was dedicated to the eight airmen who died when their Lancaster Bomber was shot down near the town."

The airmen, four of whom were Australians, managed to steer the damaged Lancaster away from the village before it crashed, saving many lives, but not their own. As a mark of gratitude and respect, the local community erected a wooden cross at the crash site, and later a plaque, which they have tended over the years."

"May this memorial stand as a tribute and a site of reflection for all families of air force personnel and service people who did not return from conflicts abroad. It will also be a permanent marker of the continued solidarity and bonds of friendship between the people of Australia, Denmark and the United Kingdom.." - Mr Damien Miller, Australia's Ambassador to Denmark, September 4th 2013.

September 4th 2013 marked the 70th year since the crash of EE138, and at 2:30pm on September 4th 2013 an unveiling ceremony was held at the EE138 crash site near Stadil, Denmark - where  a propeller blade recovered from the EE138 wreckage in 1948 was revealed. For more details about the propeller blade click on the link above.

The following photo shows Mr E Halkjær recently tending the EE138 crash site memorial after a long cold Danish winter. The removal by Mr Halkjær of some overgrown bushes has revealed many more of the original perimeter stones - very much as it was originally in 1950 when the memorial stone was placed. This clean up also makes way for an easier propeller blade installation in September 2013. Mange tak Mr Halkjær.

29/4/11 : The BBMF Lancaster flew over Buckingham Palace for the Royal wedding - what a magnificent sight. The BBMF Lancaster is one of only two Lancasters left flying in the world (the other in Canada). The BBMF Lancaster flies to Holland and Denmark next!

Planning for the ceremony at the EE138 site on May 5 is now well advanced, with both Danes and overseas contributors responding in a most heartening and generous manner to the earlier call for input to the program.

The participation in the afternoon has grown at a fast pace, with welcome offers to fill speaking and other roles concerning the events of September 4, 1943, and afterwards.

On March 30th the BBMF confirmed the Danish Lancaster flypast and further updated their web site with the 2011 display information for April and May 2011. Please click here to visit the BBMF web site: click here for details

We are pleased to advise that the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) have once again agreed to deploy the Lancaster over the skies of Denmark on the 5th and 6th of May 2011 in recognition of Denmark’s 66th year of Liberation and honouring those allied airmen who lost their lives in the fight for freedom.

Following final ratification by the BBMF the Stadil crash site of RAAF 460 Squadron Lancaster EE138 will be a major focus of the BBMF Lancaster’s journey as it performs a low altitude flypast salute to the crew of Lancaster EE138 and the people of Stadil. Another highlight of the BBMF Lancaster’s visit will be the overnight stop at the Billund Airport where it is hoped a public viewing of the aircraft will take place on the morning of the 6th of May 2011.
